How to enable users to reset password only via security questions?

Password Reset is a simple web part that allows users to reset their passwords either via answering security questions or via receiving an email indicating the password reset link. Users can customize the security questions and reset their passwords when their passwords expire, when they forget their passwords or when their accounts are locked. In this article we will show you how to reset the password via security question.

This article will demonstrate how to enable users to reset their password via security questions.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Enable users to reset password only via security questions

  1. Download the trial version of Password Reset, and install it to your SharePoint server.

  2. Browse to Central Administration > BoostSolutions Software > Password Reset Settings.

  3. On Password Reset Settings page, click Create new password reset setting.

  4. There are two kinds of Authentication Types – Windows Authentication and Form Based Authentication. Here we select Windows Authentication.

  5. Setting up Windows Authentication Password Reset is quite simple and easy to understand. If all information is set up properly, you may Test the connection and see that it will confirm that it is valid. (See below)

  6. Under Security Questions tab, configurate these settings.

    In Enable Security Questions section, select the checkbox of Enable Reset Password via Security Questions , it means that resetting password involves answering security question(s).

    In Basic Setting section, specify the maximum number of security questions, here we enter 2. The number must be between 1 and 3.

    In Password Receive Type, select Display in web part, which means that users would receive their password reset code straight on the web part.

    In Custom Security Questions, select the checkbox of User can define custom questions option. it means users can formulate their own password reset security question.

  7. Then click OK to save above settings.

  8. Open a site collection and login a user (br\annie), there’s a popup on the corner right hand side of their web page constantly reminding the user to set his Password Reset preferences.

  9. Click the Manage Password Reset Settings to enter My Password Reset Settings page.

    In Current Password section, type the password to confirm his identity.

    In Security Questions section, choose the security question and type the answer.

  10. Click OK to confirm everything and My Password Reset settings is saved.

  11. Navigate to the site page where added the Password Reset Web Part. In the box under the Enter your user name, type in user name.

    And then click on Reset Password button.

  12. On the web part, select Via Security Question option, fill-in the answers for the questions. And then click Next button.

  13. Then the new password will be shown on the web part as following. After click Sign in link, the user can log in SharePoint site using the new password.
